A component society of the American Academy of Osteopathy, The Cranial Academy was established in 1947 by students of William G. Sutherland, DO, and is composed of DOs, MDs, DMDs, and DDSs.  Its Mission is to:  Provide an understanding and greater knowledge of the principles of osteopathy, and Stimulate further research and disseminate of the philosophy, principles and techniques taught by Dr. Sutherland.

Physicians can be Board-Certified in many conventional fields and specialties.  However, a new specialty Board through the American Holistic Medical Association was established in 2000 for doctors (DOs, MDs, DMDs,and DDSs) to be Certified in Holistic Medicine.  The mission of the AHMA is to support physicians in their evolving personal and professional development and to promote an art and science of health care which acknowledges all aspects of the individual, the family and the planet.
